Many people ask: What is depression?

Depression is a common mental health condition that affects millions worldwide. It goes beyond simply feeling sad or having a low mood for a few days. To be considered clinical depression or major depressive disorder, depressive symptoms such as a depressed mood, loss of interest, or fatigue must last for at least two weeks.

Depression is one of the most recognised mental disorders described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual by the American Psychiatric Association. There are also several types of depressive disorder, including:

  • Major depression – the most widely known and often called major depressive disorder.
  • Persistent depressive disorder – a severe form that lasts for long periods.
  • Bipolar disorder – once called manic depression, where depressive episodes alternate with periods of mania.
  • Seasonal affective disorder – a mood disorder with a seasonal pattern, often in winter.
  • Perinatal depression and postpartum depression – linked to pregnancy and childbirth.

While depression is a mental illness, it often includes physical symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss or gain, and chronic pain. It can also be triggered by underlying medical conditions, stressful life events, or certain personality traits.

The important thing to know is that depression is a common condition – and with the right help, it can be effectively treated.

Frequently asked questions about our services for depression

If you have additional questions or need further clarification, feel free to reach out to us directly.
How can I determine if your therapy is right for me and my challenges with depression?

If you’re experiencing depression or struggling with depressive symptoms, our discovery call helps us understand your unique situation. We’ll discuss your symptoms of depression, family history, and health conditions to suggest the best next steps.

How can hypnotherapy, NLP or coaching help with depression?

These therapies provide effective tools for treating depression by addressing negative thought patterns and behaviours. While they are not a replacement for medical treatment, they can complement support from a GP or psychiatrist, especially for people with depression who want to take an active role in recovery.

Is depression therapy only for individuals with severe depression?

No. Whether you have mild depression, persistent depressive disorder, or a major depressive episode, therapy can help. Early initial treatment can prevent depression from worsening. Therapy is about supporting all mental health conditions, not just severe depression.

What’s the difference between depression and other mood disorders like bipolar disorder?

Depression on its own is often referred to as unipolar depression or major depression. In bipolar disorder, depressive episodes alternate with manic episodes. A proper diagnosis by a health professional is important to determine which condition applies.

Can depression exist alongside other medical conditions?

Yes. Depression often co-occurs with underlying medical conditions such as chronic pain, hormonal changes, or other health conditions. Identifying these links helps in choosing the right combination of psychological treatments and, when necessary, medical treatment.

Is it possible to bring someone with me to the sessions?

Yes, you are more than welcome to bring someone if you feel more comfortable with a support person. If possible, please let us know in advance.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Just bring an open mind and a willingness to explore the possibilities of personal growth. No specific items are required.

Do you accept Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP)?

Unfortunately, there are no Medicare rebates available for any of our services.

Are online sessions available?

Yes! We offer sessions via Zoom. Simply let us know which you'd prefer once you have booked a session.

How long will this take?

Typically, a series of 3-6 sessions is ideal. Given the nature of our approach, which focuses on shifting deep beliefs in the subconscious mind, multiple sessions may be required to fully resolve core issues that have developed over a lifetime.

However, many people feel significant shifts after even a single session. If you'd like to experience our therapy, you can book an individual session.

Choose healing, choose hope.

Depression therapy is about more than recovery – it’s about rediscovering joy, strength, and resilience.
